Conventional dwellings (No.) at Census date [2011 and 2021] by NUTS-2024 geography (down to freguesia), Occupancy status, Type of utilization and Size class of the living quarter

The conventional dwellings recorded by the census on the current NUTS-2024 geography, reported down to parish level and classified by how each home is used — usual residence, second home, vacant and for sale or to let, or vacant for another reason — as well as by whether the building is purely residential and by how many rooms the home has. Both census readings are present, 5,859,540 dwellings in 2011 and 5,970,677 in 2021, a rise of 1.9% over the decade that matches Statistics Portugal's own published figure. In 2021 that stock split into 4,142,581 usual residences, 1,104,881 second homes, 348,097 homes vacant and for sale or to let, and 375,118 vacant for other reasons. Vacancy is a first-class reading here: the share of homes standing empty comes straight from the census, never estimated. It is a count of homes, never a price. Where a value is confidential it is left empty rather than filled in. Source: Statistics Portugal, Census, CC BY 4.0.
